Northern Finland is home to a new genre: Melancholic metal. What is that, you may ask? A genre used to describe the music Finnish band Nicumo creates. It takes cues from different genres, such as goth rock, death metal and doom. Instead you get an unforgettable, unique experience that has a melodic and melancholic sound to it.
Nicumo was initiated by guitarist Atte Jääskelä in Northern Finland in 2007. They found their definite direction with a brand new line up in 2009. Now it’s time for a second full length album, called “Storm Arise”. “Storms Arise” follows the band’s well reviewed debut “The End of Silence” and takes a step towards even more versatile scales of music and emotions.

Meet Junktone, established in 2016 in Tampere. Put 5 experienced players together in a band who bring a mixture of metal, nineties Seattle grunge, rock and even punk, now what do you get? A new EP that they have called Junkrock, which is supposed to bring us a variety of unique combinations of stoner riffs and grunge melodies.

Finnish black metal band and winner of Wacken Metal Battle: From The Void have released their brutal music video “Man Created God”. From the Void is performing at the Wacken Open Air festival 2017 and the band is currently making new material.

Tuska Open Air is the biggest metal festival in the Nordic region and it’s organized by Finnish Metal Events. On its 20th birthday, this year 2017, it is also celebrating a record high in ticket sales, with 37 000 festival visitors during the weekend.
The festival is a 3-day open air metal marathon, but we start off already at Thursday, hitting the legendary Tavastia club downtown Helsinki, for the Tuska Heatseeker preliminary gig. The venue is relatively full of people, and the upper floor is closed for this event. I arrive just in time for Arion, and find people very excited about the Psychework gig, a metalband from Jyväskylä, that has just ended.

Chester Bennington (41) lead singer of Linkin Park, has been found dead by a employee on Thursday in his house. The death is been confirmed as a suicide, no note has been found.
It is known that Bennington had struggled in the past with drugs and alcohol, and admitted to suicidal thoughts in the past stemming from childhood trauma.
Bennington was close friends with Chris Cornell, who committed suicide earlier this year and would have celebrated his 53rd birthday on Thursday.
After all the confusion around the band, its leader – Papa Emeritus III announced that the band will enter the studio on 14.8.2017. to record fourth full length album. The leader, despite the fact that the band is touring all over the world (currently touring the US with Iron Maiden), is constantly working on the new material and ensure us that the new album, is going to be released in early 2018.
Tuomas Holopainen joins forces with Finnish singer Johanna Kurkela and Troy Denockley with AURI. AURI’s debut album is due in early 2018, signed with Nuclear Blast.

CRUZFEST ’17 is a celebration of Finnish street culture, featuring as a headliner a special set from Santa Cruz with never-heard-before cuts from their highly anticipated third album.
Other than that the festival offers a platform for young Finnish talents in music, such as Death Hawks, Pietarin Spektaakkeli, Hunters, Tyrantti, United Seafood, Current, Maan Tomu and many more acts to be announced.

Australian progressive/extreme metal band Ne Obliviscaris just announced that their third studio album is complete. Album will be first release without bassist Brendan “Cygnus” Brown.
The release date of the new album as well as the name of the new bassist are still unknown.
The Norwegian black metal band Satyricon is currently in the studio to finalize its 9th studio album in September.
The official release date for the album is September 22nd.
