WHAT TO EXPECT FROM ANKEA FESTIVAL 2026

What should you expect from Ankea Festival? Honestly, we have no clue, but we’re all about to find out together! Ankea is a brand-new festival dedicated to progressive and alternative music, which, if you’ve spent more than five minutes on this website, you already know is exactly up our alley. The festival is organized on June 5th and 6th, 2026, in Tampere.

After years of hoping Finland would eventually get a festival properly dedicated to progressive and alternative music, it’s honestly exciting to finally see one appear, and with a lineup this strong right out of the gate, too. So, thank you, Nahka Agency and Alt Agency for making my manifestation real! On paper, this already feels like the kind of festival people will be bragging about attending “before it got big” five years from now. Of course, a great lineup is only part of the equation, but so far, things are looking extremely promising. So, let’s take a look at what Ankea has in store so far.

There are actually quite a few progressive music festivals around Europe. Sadly, I’ve only managed to experience Euroblast so far, but I’m happy to see that Ankea seems to share a very important similarity with it: common sense.

The festival setup includes two stages: the Ankea Stage and the Factory Stage. Usually, massive festivals treat overlapping bands like it’s some kind of an art form. Suddenly, you have to spend your day looking at the Excel spreadsheet you made in advance that took you forever because it’s just one of those puzzles that is absolutely impossible. “Okay, if I leave this set 12 minutes early, speedwalk across the site, sacrifice my knees, and briefly transcend time itself, I can catch three songs from the next band before sprinting towards the main stage for the headliner’s encore.” Summer festival season somehow always turns into advanced mathematics against your will since festivals cram in so many bands, and at the same time, they somehow manage to overlap everything you actually want to see.

Thankfully, much like Euroblast, the organizers seem to understand that prog fans actually like discovering new bands instead of stress-testing their cardio. So they’ve done the unthinkable: there are no overlaps!

Honestly, I can’t applaud that enough. It’s one of the biggest selling points imaginable for me personally. The idea of attending a festival without having to choose between favorite band number one and favorite band number two feels almost luxurious. Just music, vibes, and the freedom to wander around and explore!

The Lineup

Let’s talk a little about the lineup, which is honestly impressive for a first edition of a festival. There’s a full spectrum of sounds here: psych, prog, stoner, and plenty of bands that seem to exist purely to confuse genre labels and music journalists alike. And, we have to say it, even if we like those bands, it’s pretty interesting seeing a festival in Finland without bands like INSOMNIUM, STAM1NA, or TURMION KÄTILÖT. Instead, they’ve included some rare Finnish prog oddities, which I have never had the pleasure of seeing live!

Since we’ll be covering the festival as a duo with very different tastes in music, we thought it would be fun to also include our personal recommendations throughout the article. Marco Manzi leans more toward the extreme side of things, while I, Laureline Tilkin, mostly listen to progressive metal and anything that’s at least a little weird. So if one of us highlights a band you don’t know yet, maybe take it as a sign to check them out!

DEMONIC DEATH JUDGE (Ankea Stage, 13:30 – 14:10)

Hailing from Kotka, DEMONIC DEATH JUDGE blends sludge, doom, stoner grooves, death ’n’ roll, and smoky blues into a filthy, riff-heavy sound that’s impossible to ignore. Their 2025 album “Absolutely Launched” continues the band’s tradition of crushing heaviness, swaggering grooves, and headbang-inducing chaos, proving once again that they know exactly how to turn a venue into a sweaty wall of riffs and destruction. Recommended by Marco.

VIRTA (Factory Stage, 14:15 – 15:05)

VIRTA, formed by Erik Fräk, Antti Hevosmaa, and Heikki Selamo, has earned a reputation for immersive live shows and a sound that effortlessly drifts between ambient electronics, Nordic jazz, post-rock, and psychedelia. At Ankea, the band will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their acclaimed album “Hurmos” by performing the record in full — a fitting showcase for one of Finland’s most atmospheric and genre-defying acts.

CIRCLE (Ankea Stage, 15:10 – 16:10)

Founded in Pori in 1991, CIRCLE has long held legendary status within Finland’s underground scene — and for good reason. Constantly reinventing itself while operating entirely within its own wonderfully strange universe, the band has become one of the country’s most distinctive and internationally respected alternative acts, blending experimentation, repetition, heavy grooves, and pure unpredictability into something unmistakably CIRCLE.

EARTHSIDE (Factory Stage, 16:15 – 17:15)

EARTHSIDE has built a reputation as one of modern progressive music’s most ambitious and cinematic acts, combining massive compositions with an uncompromising artistic vision. Their acclaimed 2023 album “Let The Truth Speak” expanded that scope even further, featuring an impressive lineup of guest performers including Daniel Tompkins, Baard Kolstad, AJ Channer, and Larry Braggs. At Ankea 2026, the band will finally make their long-awaited Finnish live debut. If you are a die-hard fan of the band, you’re in luck, because the day before the festival, June 4th, 2026, EARTHSIDE will play a full-length set at On the Rocks in Helsinki, and perhaps if we’re very lucky, we might hear some new material, since the band just dropped their new single, “A Dying Star.” Recommended by Laureline.

GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT (Ankea Stage, 17:20 – 18:20)

GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT has captivated listeners around the world with its immersive blend of post-rock, psychedelia, and cinematic instrumental music. Known for both powerful live performances and richly layered studio albums, the Wicklow-based group weaves traditional instruments such as sitar, cello, zither, shamanic drums, bowed psaltery, chimes, and tanpura into its atmospheric soundscapes. With their latest album, “Embers,” the band continues to expand and refine its unmistakable sonic world. Recommended by Laureline.

SLIFT (Factory Stage, 18:25 – 19:25)

French trio SLIFT are known for their high-energy, otherworldly live shows and a sound that constantly pushes the limits of what a power trio can be. Their music draws from a wide spectrum of influences — psychedelia, garage rock, progressive rock, space rock, stoner, acid rock, and metal — all fused into a dense, explosive sonic experience. With three studio albums to their name, including the 2024 release “Ilion,” the band continues to refine their cosmic intensity, and at Ankea 2026, they will make their first-ever live appearance in Finland, and it will be extra special because the band is releasing their new album, “Fantasia,” on the same day as their show! Recommended by Marco.

IHSAHN (Ankea Stage, 19:30 – 20:30)

IHSAHN, best known as the creative force behind black metal pioneers EMPEROR, returns to Finland with his solo project, continuing a career defined by constant reinvention. As a multi-instrumentalist and producer, he has released eight solo albums under his own name, with the latest self-titled record, “Ihsahn,” arriving in 2024. His solo work is widely recognized for its genre-defying approach, blending elements of classical music, industrial textures, progressive structures, and black metal into a distinctive and ever-evolving sound. Recommended by Laureline.

KÆLAN MIKLA (Factory Stage, 20:35 – 21:35)

KÆLAN MIKLA return to Finland while working on their fourth album, continuing their evolution from an unexpected beginning as a poetry competition entry into one of the standout names in Iceland’s underground scene. Emerging from Reykjavík, the trio has built a reputation for immersive, audiovisual live performances rooted in folklore, fairytales, and a distinctly haunting atmosphere, turning each show into a vivid journey through myth, mood, and mystery. Recommended by Marco.

LEPROUS (Factory Stage, Ankea Stage, 21:40 – 22:55)

Headlining Friday at Ankea Festival, LEPROUS arrive as one of progressive music’s most shape-shifting forces. Emerging from Norway’s Notodden, the band first made their mark with “Tall Poppy Syndrome” and quickly began redefining their own boundaries on “Bilateral,” setting in motion a career built on constant reinvention rather than repetition.

Across eight albums, they’ve moved through an ever-expanding palette of influences without ever losing their identity, culminating most recently in “Melodies of Atonement” — a record that leans further into emotional intensity and dynamic contrast. On stage, LEPROUS are known for translating that complexity into something immediate and gripping, with live performances that are as expressive as they are precise. Recommended by Laureline.

THIS WILL DESTROY YOU (Factory Stage, 23:00 – 00:00)

THIS WILL DESTROY YOU are an instrumental collective whose sound sits at the intersection of post-rock, ambient textures, and slow-burning, doom-tinged dynamics. Formed in Texas in 2005, they first gained wide attention with the “Young Mountain” EP, setting the tone for a career built on atmosphere, tension, and gradual emotional release. Albums like “This Will Destroy You,” “Tunnel Blanket,” and Another Language further expanded their range, from delicate minimalism to overwhelming sonic weight, earning them a place in both underground circles and wider cinematic culture through placements in films such as Moneyball, World War Z, and Foxcatcher. Their appearance at Ankea marks only their second-ever performance in Finland, nearly two decades after their first in 2009, making this a long-awaited and genuinely rare return.

ROYAL SORROW (Factory Stage, 12:30 – 13:25)

Modern, massive, and unapologetically dramatic, ROYAL SORROW merges heavy music with electronic production, symphonic textures, pop influences, and contemporary songwriting. Years of collaborating together as musicians and producers have helped shape a sound that feels polished without losing its impact, balancing towering vocal performances with dense and dynamic instrumentation. Since signing with InsideOut Music in 2022, the band has continued refining its cinematic approach to modern metal, moving seamlessly between delicate passages and explosive heaviness, which all came together in their first album as ROYAL SORROW (the band has released music together under the name of EDGE OF HAZE), “Innerdeeps.” Recommended by Laureline.

RIOGHAN (Ankea Stage, 13:30 – 14:15)

Blending cinematic atmosphere with Gothic melancholy and modern progressive metal, RIOGHAN creates music that constantly shifts between vulnerability and crushing intensity. Following the success of their sophomore album “Kept,” the band now enters a new phase with the recently released “Frozen” EP, continuing to build a sound driven by strong contrasts, emotional weight, and dramatic storytelling.

BRUCE SOORD (Factory Stage, 14:20 – 15:20)

Known primarily as the creative core of THE PINEAPPLE THIEF, Bruce Soord brings his solo material to Finland for the very first time at Ankea Festival 2026. Away from the expansive arrangements of his main band, Soord’s solo work leans into restraint and intimacy, focusing on atmosphere, subtle songwriting, and deeply personal expression. Additionally, Soord recently released his latest album, “Ghosts In The Park,” so we’re curious to see if we will get to hear some new music in the set! Recommended by Laureline.

IHLO (Ankea Stage, 15:25 – 16:25)

UK progressive metal outfit IHLO has spent the last few years quietly building momentum within the modern prog scene, combining technical precision with a strong emotional core. Their second album, “Legacy,” reflects years of careful development, blending sharp rhythmic work, cinematic electronics, soaring hooks, and dense production into a record that feels both expansive and intensely focused. We originally stumbled upon them at Euroblast when they stepped in last-minute for HAKEN, and despite a few technical hiccups, they completely won us over. By the end of the festival, “Legacy” was already on repeat. Recommended by Laureline.

Check out our recent interview with the band here.

VERMILIA (Factory Stage, 16:30 – 17:15)

Entirely self-directed in both music and visual artistry, VERMILIA approaches her work with a rare level of independence, personally creating everything from songs and artwork to videos and ritual instruments. Combining pagan metal with melancholic melodies and haunting vocal arrangements sung in Finnish, she crafts performances that feel atmospheric, spiritual, and deeply rooted in emotion and tradition.

GREEN CARNATION (Ankea Stage, 17:20 – 18:20)

Few bands have taken a road quite like GREEN CARNATION. After disappearing in the early 2000s, the Norwegian progressive metal outfit returned in 2016 and reignited a journey that clearly still had unfinished chapters left to write. Their comeback has since evolved into a full creative rebirth, most recently leading to the release of “A Dark Poem Pt. I” in 2025, and “A Dark Poem Pt. II: Sanguis” was released in April this year. It seems that GREEN CARNATION has plenty of stellar new work to select for their set. Recommended by Laureline.

A.A. WILLIAMS (Factory Stage, 18:25 – 19:25)

With a sound rooted somewhere between dark folk, post-rock, classical arrangements, and dreamlike atmosphere, A.A. Williams has established herself as one of the most distinctive names in contemporary progressive music. Since first gaining wider attention through her self-titled EP and a breakout appearance at Roadburn Festival, she has continued to captivate audiences with emotionally heavy, slow-burning compositions that feel equally fragile and immense. A.A. Williams will release her new album, “Solstice,” one day prior on June 5th. So, we get to celebrate another album release at Ankea Festival! Recommended by Marco.

TEXTURES (Ankea Stage, 19:30 – 20:30)

The return of TEXTURES marks the comeback of one of the most influential names in modern progressive metal. After ending the band in 2018, the Dutch six-piece re-emerged in 2024 with plans for new material and a return to live stages, much to the excitement of longtime fans. At the beginning of the year, they released the result of this comeback, “Genotype.” Through landmark albums like “Silhouettes” and “Dualism,” the band helped lay the groundwork for the modern djent movement years before the style fully exploded in popularity. Their rhythmic precision, technical songwriting, and groove-focused heaviness would go on to influence bands such as PERIPHERY, ANIMALS AS LEADERS, and TESSERACT. Recommended by Laureline.

Check out our recent interview with the band here.

SYLVAINE (Factory Stage, 20:35 – 21:35)

The work of SYLVAINE lives in the space between extremes. Drawing from atmospheric black metal, ambient music, shoegaze, and ethereal folk influences, the Norwegian artist creates deeply emotional compositions centered around contrast: softness and violence, stillness and chaos, isolation and transcendence. Her performances aim less at spectacle and more at creating an immersive emotional release shared between artist and audience. Recommended by Marco.

KATATONIA (Ankea Stage, 21:40 – 22:55)

At Ankea Festival 2026, KATATONIA will celebrate the 20th anniversary of “The Great Cold Distance” with a rare full-album performance. Released in 2006, the album became one of the defining moments of the band’s career, combining melancholic atmosphere, restrained heaviness, and haunting songwriting into a record that still resonates strongly nearly two decades later.

ORANSSI PAZUZU (Factory Stage, 23:00 – 00:00)

Trying to describe ORANSSI PAZUZU too precisely almost defeats the purpose. The Finnish group twists together black metal, psychedelic experimentation, hypnotic repetition, and pure cosmic discomfort into something that feels genuinely alien. Their music crawls forward through dissonance, strange rhythms, and suffocating atmosphere, creating an experience that feels less like a concert and more like willingly walking into a very bad dream. Recommended by Marco.

Location

For those who have never been to Tampere before, let me introduce you to one of Finland’s coolest cities, and yes, I am absolutely biased, but also correct. Tampere is packed with history and built between two lakes, Pyhäjärvi and Näsijärvi, which already gives it unfair scenic advantages. The city is filled with old industrial red-brick buildings and former factory areas that somehow manage to make everything look simultaneously rugged, cozy, and strangely cinematic. Honestly, in some ways it feels even more steeped in history than Helsinki.

The festival itself takes place at Hiedanranta, an old industrial area known these days for its street art, graffiti, and creative atmosphere, which feels extremely fitting for a festival full of bands that refuse to behave normally. One of the stages is even called the Factory Stage, so thankfully they seem committed to fully embracing the setting, I’m looking forward to seeing how things blend into the site.

And honestly, if you’re traveling to Ankea and have some extra time, do yourself a favor and actually explore the city a little. Walk around the center, wander by the lakes, get lost in the old industrial areas for a bit. Tampere has a very particular charm that kind of sneaks up on you. I lived there for a while myself, and even now the city still occupies a very special corner of my heart.

Food & Drinks

I’ll fully admit that I’m still a little in the dark about what to expect food-wise from Ankea, mostly because at the time of writing there haven’t been that many restaurant vendors announced yet, and the few names revealed so far were completely unfamiliar to me. What has been announced, however, is festival beer. Not one beer, not two beers, but three different festival beers!

To be fair, it does make sense when you remember that Nahka Agency also works with Coolhead during the summer, so clearly somebody involved here (read: Nahka Sami) takes beverages very seriously. I’m not even sure some massive festivals have their own custom beers, but I can only applaud initiatives like this. I’m sure they’ll be running out of them pretty soon, it’s Finland after all.

Personally, I’ll probably leave the official beer tasting duties to Marco Manzi, because these days I’m much more likely to end up hunting for the nearest cocktail bar instead. Especially if the weather behaves itself for once and Finland decides to offer us more than twelve minutes of sunshine.

So overall, yes, our expectations for Ankea are admittedly pretty high. Maybe dangerously high. But with a debut lineup this strong and a festival concept that already seems to understand exactly what progressive music fans actually want, it’s hard not to get excited. Whether the festival fully lives up to the hype remains to be seen, but you can be absolutely certain we’ll report back afterwards with all our thoughts, opinions, and more.

Apparently, two-day tickets are already around 75% sold out, which feels like a pretty strong sign that we’re not the only ones paying attention. So if you’ve been considering going, this might be the moment to stop “thinking about it” and start making financially questionable but emotionally rewarding decisions. You can find more information and tickets via Ankea Festival.
