SONG OF THE DAY: Lessdmv – Too Late (Txe Inxuisitor)

How come some of the most out-of-the-box songs come from either smaller bands or independent artists? This is the question plaguing me since I listened to the new ILLUMISHADE and INFECTED RAIN albums as well as the new singles released by LUNA KILLS and LESSDMV. Somehow, when bands and artists gain a certain amount of popularity they strive to make music that is accessible and within their wheelhouse and are less likely to take risks, but that is a different discussion. Getting back to the issue at hand, after a couple of raw, acoustic singles – “Again” and “Closer (We Are Here)” LESSDMV decided to start the year with a bang by independently releasing “Too Late (Txe Inxuisitor)” which is nothing short of a banger.

The new single is also meant to indicate the beginning of a new chapter for LESSDMV with a new symbol and a new energy. The full story and meaning behind this latest concept can be found on Julian Larre’s Instagram page that is only for his Patreon community. What I can tell you is that musically this is probably the most dramatic and multifaceted piece he’s written so far. The song is like a jigsaw puzzle with many moving parts that somehow fit together quite well. It starts off calmly with some ominous keys before pounding drums join in that lead to a vocal melody that sounds almost melancholy in its delivery which gives way to a short part with fast-paced (almost rapped) vocals that then moves into the harsh pre-chorus section. And this is only the first 40 seconds of the song. The chorus itself is energetic, with some intense, gritty vocals.

I really like how the various sections of this song transition from one to the other as the whole composition dances between minimalistic verses and a fuller-sounding chorus that don’t ever feel disconnected from each other or from the overall sound design of the track. Vocally, this song showcases Julian Larre’s versatility as he moves seamlessly between softer and harsher vocals with even some whispered words here and there that add a menacing vibe to the lyrical content. The bridge part is interesting as it juxtaposes fragility and heaviness with layered vocals and dramatic orchestrations before the pre-chorus and chorus pick up the pace and energy for a final reprise, building up in intensity only to end with whispered vocals and atmospheric synths. If this isn’t a rollercoaster of a song, I don’t know what is.

The contrast and cohesion between all these moving parts is just a testament to Julian Larre’s creativity and drive to experiment with everything as nothing is off the table when it comes to his vision. The only downside is that you can only do so much with programmed drums and guitars and I wonder how this track would actually sound with a full band. Nonetheless, what he manages to achieve with each song he releases is not just different from the rest but expands the LDMV universe in exciting ways.
