On October 12th, 2024, Italian enchantress Lili Refrain and the in melancholic Nordic folk-rooted KALANDRA visited Berlin as part of their Autumn 2024 tour. Hole44 was the place to be for a folky, atmospheric evening.
Even though Lili Refrain— a solo artist and multi-instrumentalist who creates atmospheric and eerie tunes in real-time using synths, loops, drums, guitar, and her voice— is alone on stage, her presence is as powerful as an orchestra. Her voice reverberates from opera to raw chants. Her set consisted of tracks from her albums “Mana“ and “ULU,“ including the most memorable ballad, “Mami Wata.” A must-see performance, if she’s ever performing on a stage near you.
Coming from up North, this was KALANDRA‘s first headlining tour in their 15 years of existence. They opened with “The Waiting Game” and went into “Slow Motion.” Vocalist Katrine Stenbekk roamed the stage barefoot in an eerie white dress, evoking an enchanted forest spirit atmosphere. Her voice was dreamy and powerful. The song “Ensom” was written in collaboration with a linguistic Norwegian professor. The set was well-balanced, with more calm and acoustic melodies and more guitar-heavy ones. A big hit was WARDRUNA‘s cover of “Helvegen.” They closed with “Bardaginn.” Overall, the show had splendid light and a clean sound which allowed the performance to engulf the audience into their emotional journey.
