On the June 12th, 2025, we had an opportunity to enjoy a great evening full of spectacular black metal. Two renowned representatives of the genre, ULTAR and GRIMA, came to Finland to play three concerts in Turku, Helsinki, and Tampere.
On the day of the concert, Turku’s Nirvana was packed and filled with anticipation. The first band of the night was local black metallers from AMURTA, who warmed the audience up nicely for the performance of ULTAR. The latter’s music can be described as post-black metal, however, fans of the genre will not be disappointed, as it is just as heavy and dark. The musicians played shrouded in thick smoke, which added to the ritualistic atmosphere.
The headliner of the night, the Siberian black metal band GRIMA, took to the stage dressed in long black robes and masks that resembled trees. Their whole aesthetic is based on nature references and paganism, and their performance was nothing short of a ritual. The black metal GRIMA plays is rich and heavy, with intricate guitar work and fast drums. Give them a listen if you’re still unfamiliar with their discography and you won’t regret.
