On April 4th, 2024, Danish multi-instrumentalist MYRKUR, along with Jonathan Hultén, stopped at the Berlin club Heimathafen as part of their Spine tour.

Jonathan Hultén is a Danish singer/songwriter who went solo after 15 years as the lead guitarist of TRIBULATION. His musical style could be described as neo-folk, with only an acoustic guitar and his eerie voice, his stage image theatrical, like a dark gothic queen. Surrounded by plants and flowers on stage, he immersed the crowd in a dreamy state, creating an enchanted forest vibe, which was the perfect mood for his latest album “The Forest Sessions.”

MYRKUR entered the stage to the opening song of her latest album “Spine”“Bålfærd.” The stage was beautifully decorated with all kinds of plants and flowers, creating this eerie atmosphere. MYRKUR was joined on stage by vocalist, pianist, and bassist Maja Shining, with whom she collaborated on the “Ragnarok” EP, “River’s Blessed” demo, and “Spine.” The setlist was a presentation of her new album, performing all tracks except the closing one. “Mothlike” and “Like Humans” sounded lyrical and dark, and “Valkyriernes sang” was an epic ballad sung by a valkyrie. The pace slowed on “My Blood Is Gold” when Amalie Bruun played the piano. But she had some old tracks prepared that made some fans tear up. The folk tales of “Bonden i Kragen” and “Leaves of Yggdrasil,” the dark and outwardly “Death of Days” and “Crown.” Amalie glided gracefully near the edge of the stage, bathed in cold light, adding more mysticism to her performance. The heavier “The Serpent” and fan favorite “Ulvinde” resonated in the venue. The latter lacked the intense shrieks of MYRKUR‘s black metal era, replaced by kulning, which also sounded great, but I wished to hear at least a glimpse of that era. Nevertheless, the show was an emotional roller-coaster with a perfectly crafted setlist, amazing set decorations, and musicians delivering their music with heart and soul. They closed with a powerful and eerie kulning from Amalie and Maja.
