REVIEW: Smith/Kotzen – Black Light/White Noise

Forging a bold and electrifying sonic identity, Adrian Smith and Richie Kotzen have once again delivered a masterpiece with “Black Light / White Noise,” officially released on March 7th, 2025. This album is a testament to their undeniable chemistry, where raw energy meets masterful craftsmanship, culminating in a collection of songs that transcend genre boundaries. With a foundation rooted in blues, hard rock, and R&B, Smith and Kotzen have not only solidified their musical partnership but have elevated it to soaring new heights.

Their journey began with their self-titled debut in 2021, a striking fusion of hard rock and traditional R&B that immediately set the stage for their unique sound. The follow-up, “Better Days…and Night,” showcased both their studio prowess and their electrifying live performances. Now, “Black Light / White Noise” builds upon this legacy, presenting a dynamic and versatile collection that stands shoulder to shoulder with some of the finest work either musician has ever produced.

Released as lead singles, “White Noise” and “Black Light” capture the album’s essence, offering a taste of the powerful synergy Smith and Kotzen have cultivated. Both musicians may come from different backgrounds—Smith known for his iconic work with IRON MAIDEN and his bluesy, rugged voice, while Kotzen’s versatile style blends blues, R&B, and rock with soulful vocals and intricate guitar techniques. Yet, it’s precisely this contrast that makes their collaboration so compelling.

White Noise” delivers a high-octane blast of pure hard rock energy, driven by scorching guitar solos and vocals brimming with raw emotion. Smith’s bluesy voice cuts through the mix with a rich, grounded intensity that complements Kotzen’s smooth, soulful tone. Their vocal interplay feels effortless, each voice enhancing the other rather than competing. The guitar work follows the same pattern—Smith’s sharp, blues-infused solos are perfectly balanced by Kotzen’s fluid, expressive playing, creating a cohesive sound that feels spontaneous and alive. Despite Smith’s metal heritage, there’s not a trace of IRON MAIDEN’s influence here; instead, it’s a pure rock ‘n’ roll spectacle forged by mutual passion and creativity.

Meanwhile, “Black Light” showcases a more atmospheric, groove-laden side of the duo’s dynamic. The track’s hauntingly beautiful melodies are underpinned by Kotzen’s emotive vocal delivery, while Smith’s gritty, earthy tone adds weight and authenticity. The guitar interplay between the two continues to impress, with smooth transitions from searing leads to intricate, blues-drenched riffs. The rhythm section is tight and precise, providing a solid foundation for the soaring vocals and dazzling solos. The track’s blend of blues, rock, and R&B elements is executed with such finesse that it feels both timeless and refreshingly modern.

Although not yet released, “Muddy Waters” is anticipated to be a tribute to the blues legends that inspired much of Smith and Kotzen’s style. If the indications from the previous singles are anything to go by, this track will likely blend traditional blues riffs with their signature hard-rocking edge, creating something both nostalgic and refreshing.

The production quality of “Black Light / White Noise” is nothing short of pristine. It retains the raw, live feel of their previous efforts while enhancing every aspect of their musical vision with a modern, polished edge. The guitars cut through with sharp precision, the vocals resonate with soulful intensity, and the rhythm section provides a rock-solid backbone throughout the album.

The essence of “Black Light / White Noise” lies in the seamless interplay between Smith and Kotzen. Their contrasting yet complementary playing styles intertwine effortlessly, their vocals and guitar leads trading places in a mesmerizing display of virtuosity. The production captures the organic, spontaneous nature of their collaboration, making every note feel as if it’s being born in the moment.

Atmospheric, ambitious, and undeniably brilliant, “Black Light / White Noise” is more than just an album—it’s an exhilarating musical odyssey. Channeling the spirit of legendary acts like JIMI HENDRIX, CREAM, and DEEP PURPLE, Smith and Kotzen have crafted a sound that is both timeless and refreshingly modern. Their latest offering is a testament to their artistic synergy, proving that this partnership is not just a fleeting project but an enduring force destined for greatness.
