REVIEW: Ikinä – Ikinä

From Kouvola, the Finnish powerhouse IKINÄ strikes again with their latest album released on October 27th, 2023. Known for their captivating and high-energy live performances, this metal band has consistently pushed the boundaries of modern metal. With their fourth full-length self-titled album “Ikinä,” they dive deeper into their blend of metalcore, delivering a more brutal and intense sound than ever before. This mesmerizing release takes listeners on a profound journey through the complexities of human emotion and the gritty realities of life, showcasing the band’s evolution and their uncompromised passion for their craft.

The album starts with “Rituaali,” a haunting and atmospheric track setting the tone for what’s to come. Exceptional drum beats and hardcore riffs embrace the ethereal sound and evocative lyrics making it a compelling introduction to “Ikinä.” This song serves as the band’s flame, reflecting the power of their music. The central question posed in the song, “Do you choose life?,” encapsulates the thematic core of the album, setting the stage for a profound exploration of human emotions and existential questioning.

Syvämeri” featuring Patrik Nuorteva is a standout collaboration that showcases the band’s ability to work with other artists. The song’s depth and emotional weight are accentuated by Patrik‘s vocals, making it a powerful addition to the album. “Syvämeri,” tells about deep feelings and twists of the mind – about love. From the fear of losing and extreme commitment. The song is heavy, beautiful, and floating in the dark. Blast beats and screams combined with a very traditional IKINÄ pop chorus.

As the album progresses, it becomes clear that IKINÄ has crafted a cohesive and emotionally charged narrative. Tracks like “Tapa loinen” and “Riivaaja” delve into darker themes, with brooding guitar work and intense vocals creating a sense of urgency and introspection. Both are still very energetic and complimenting aggressive singing and growling adds another layer of emotion.

Pelkääjän paikalla” introduces a more melodic and introspective moment, offering a brief respite before the album delves into its deeper emotions. Slapping bass is a great addition to give the song more dynamic with the twist of powerful breakdown toward the end of the song  “Aarre” follows, providing a sense of mystery and intrigue with its intricate instrumental arrangements and captivating lyrics.

Kohti kuolemaa” featuring CELLOMANIA is another collaboration that adds a unique layer to the album. The fusion of different musical elements and talents creates a dynamic and memorable listening experience. The song is very dynamic and the powerful melodic but rough riffs are in the sections with the cello softened but emotionally powerful. “Leuat” is an instinctive and intense track that showcases the band’s ability to convey raw emotions through their music. “Haamukipuja” explores the pain and haunting memories that can linger in one’s life, with melancholic melodies and resonating lyrics.

Followed by the song “Tie,” which offers a sense of reflection and introspection. Its beautiful blend of instrumentation and poetic lyrics leaves a lasting impression. Bitterness and feelings of failure are spat out in the strongly forward-moving song. As the band says song “Tie“(The Road) is also a kind of description of IKINÄ‘s creative journey up to now and will continue.

Minä ja pimeä” delves into the darker corners of the human psyche, creating an atmosphere of unease and tension. Closing the album with “Graniitti” is a fitting choice, as it encapsulates the emotional journey that IKINÄ takes the listener on. Its gloomy and contemplative nature provides a sense of closure and finality to the album.

IKINÄ’s “Ikinä” is a remarkable work of art that showcases the band’s growth and maturity as musicians and songwriters. Complimenting the vocals of Katariina and Tuuli this time with more aggressiveness and screams, is the newest addition to the band, bassist Aake, supporting the vocalists with backing vocals and some melodic bass lines. Drummer Santteri perfectly keeps not only the beat but also the whole dynamic of the soundscape. The guitar parts of Samuli are unforgettable from the melodic solos and melodies that give the songs different variations to the hardcore riffs that make you jump and slam. The album takes you on a poignant journey through human experience, with each song offering a unique glimpse into the band’s emotional landscape. Whether you’re a longtime fan of IKINÄ or a newcomer to their music, “Ikinä” is an album that deserves to be heard and appreciated for its beauty and depth.
