If you like that grim, dark and eerie atmosphere that expresses our internal battles, then this featured single is definitely one for you. Every now and then we will highlight a single that has grabbed our attention so much that it deserved to be featured on our page. This week we will make room for a single that was released 2 May 2018 and immediately made it to our Spotify playlist. I’m talking about a great addition to the music scene of Jyväskylä Unborn Generation, who are ready to present you the first single “Shadow” from their album “Vøid”, which will be released through Inverse Records on 15 June 2018
“Shadow” was the first song the band every composted, looking back it was almost inevitable for them not to let it end up to be the first single of the album. The song describes the perpetual battle we are all part of, where we must acknowledge to triumph implicating the embracing of the dark. This theme is also the overarching concept of “Vøid”.
When it comes to applying that theme, Unborn Generation certainly has made that possible. “Shadow” is fucking heavy, dark and grim. The atmosphere that the band has managed to build up through a grind ‘n’ roll sound, is very compelling. In fact the song matches the concept so much, that it is almost kind of scary. The atmosphere does feel like a shadow hanging over you, something threatening and eerie that overcomes you in the end. Vocals, guitars, bass, drum, everything fits into the same picture. A twist in the song definitely is the reference to Simon & Garfunkel‘s classic “Sound of Silence”, which provides its own dialogue with darkness:
“Hello Darkness my old friend”
“I’m not your friend”
“I’ve come to vanquish you again”
This moment is very brief, but the reference to the lyrics of the song are quite clear, the meaning of these words are very deep however, fit the song very nicely and somehow this makes this short moment, a highlight in the song for me. Overall the production of the song is quite nice, it’s dark, edgy, the sound is very raw and thus the production really fits with the atmosphere of the song.
The concept of the song, fits so nicely with the music and choices made within the song, that it has done a great job of convincing me of its worth. I don’t know about you, but I’m looking forward to “Vøid”. So, what are you still waiting for? You can listen to the single now yourself! Check out the lyric video here on YouTube.
