REVIEW: Fucking Hands – EP: Coniecto Qui

Temmes-based doom/sludge metal act FUCKING HANDS have release their first EP, “Coniecto Qui,” independently on December 26th, 2020. This is the follow-up to their 2019 debut album, “Hellhole Blues,” and sees the band cementing their style of metal and better defining their sound.

The four tracks presented on “Coniecto Qui” fall pretty much in line with everything else the band has put out so far. The only one that deviates a bit from the norm is the opening track, “Praise,” which is groovier, boasts a rather catchy chorus section, and has a more present rhythmic section. Other than that, Mio Saksio’s vocals are rough-sounding, Ville Saksio’s guitars are gritty, Teppo Törmä’s bass tone is dirty, and Jani Eloniemi’s drums are big. Keeping the EP more sludge-oriented, “There’s No Tomorrow” is harsh and abrasive, with an interesting guitar melody that contrasts with the shouted vocals and the slow tempo. The bass gets a moment to shine, as Teppo Törmä shows off his playing, but soon the distorted guitars join in to create a fuller sound. I enjoy the fact that the track starts off immediately with the vocals and the guitars at the forefront, and ends with this little instrumental section, making for a neat variation of tempo and melody.

Straightforward and heavy, “Evil Eyes” has a melodious middle section that changes the mood of the song from aggressive and in-your-face to somewhat calmer and groovier. There’s also an Arabic/oriental melody rearing its head for a few seconds, but it’s cut short as the chorus comes in and finishes the song in the same harsh manner it began. Loud drums, distorted guitars, and screamed vocals open up the heaviest track on the EP, “Guess Who.” The layered vocals in the chorus section add to this feeling of heaviness and aggression, while the chugging guitars and drums keep things moving along at a rather alert pace.

All things considered, this is quite an enjoyable and energetic EP that showcases the talent and potential of these four Finns. Fans of such bands as EYEHATEGOD and ACID BATH will find plenty to like about what FUCKING HANDS has to offer in terms of sludge and doom metal.
