On December 7th, 2023, NIBIRU ORDEAL and STRATOVARIUS were set to play at Sellosali in Espoo. This was my first time experiencing a show at Sellosali, and, to be honest, it didn’t quite feel like the right venue for what STRATOVARIUS had to offer. I understand that some people enjoy seated shows, but personally, I found it to be a bit detached. Perhaps a compromise could be reached, allowing the front rows to stand while providing seating options for those who prefer a more relaxed experience toward the back, ensuring everyone can enjoy the show from their preferred vantage point.
The evening kicked off with NIBIRU ORDEAL, a band hailing from Kuopio. Admittedly, I’m not well-versed in classic power metal, so I won’t pass judgment on their performance. However, I couldn’t help but wish for something more distinctive to linger in my memory.
STRATOVARIUS made a valiant effort to connect with the audience, but it felt like the venue posed a challenge for them. The crowd seemed a bit restrained, hindering the band’s usual engagement. Despite this, they delivered a setlist packed with all the classics that resonated with my nostalgia. I find myself hoping to catch them at a larger festival in the future, as Sellosali‘s stage felt somewhat confined for a band of their caliber.
