THE TIGER LILLIES are one of the hardest-working bands out there, performing over 200 shows a year. They boast a dedicated following and a unique sound and style that blends circus music and cabaret with the gentler tunes of chansons and wild bursts of gypsy music. When they announced their visit to Finland, we eagerly made plans to catch them at G Livelab Helsinki on Wednesday, March 27th, 2024.

The show at G Livelab Helsinki was sold out, leaving much of the crowd standing behind the tables set out in front of the stage. In a packed venue like G Livelab, visibility isn’t always optimal for late arrivals. However, this didn’t seem to dampen the excitement, as there was a palpable buzz in the crowd awaiting the show.

The band commenced with a showmanship honed by decades of experience. First, there was an announcement that hushed the crowd, followed by the three-man band marching onto the stage. Even before the music began, THE TIGER LILLIES made a statement with their appearance. The clown-esque makeup combined with suits and attire lent a darkly humorous, theatrical look to the band.

The show kicked off with the song “Hell,” featuring its trademark line, “You’re going to hell.” From there, it was an evening of drugs, murders, doom, and despair. One might expect the subjects THE TIGER LILLIES sing about to feel heavy after listening to them for a good hour and a half (with a theatrical interlude, of course), but surprisingly, they are delivered with a slant of irony that makes it all bearable. Once the band delved into their hits like the hysterical “Banging in the Nails” (celebrating the crucifixion of Jesus) or the gloomier “Crack of Doom” (about how everything perishes in the end), the audience was hooked.

And of course, the band plays exceptionally well. The music might not be the most technically demanding, but hardly a note is hit wrong (except when it’s part of the show), and everything flows seamlessly. The melodies are catchy, inviting singalongs and clapping from the audience. However, for the most part, the show is for watching, much like a theater play.

That said, there’s a significant theatrical element to THE TIGER LILLIES‘ show, which demands precise timing. When vocalist Martyn Jacques and drummer Budi Butenoup exchange glances, signaling a misstep, and the song is restarted three times, it’s all part of the show. The band’s performance is highly expressive: they make exaggerated faces and gestures, and each member has a role to play. Although the main focus is on Jacques, it’s equally entertaining to watch Butenoup or bassist/saw player/thereminist Adrian Stout as they act out their roles throughout the performance.

THE TIGER LILLIES have been around for a long time and show no signs of slowing down. Let’s hope to see them again in Finland soon. Check out the photos from the show below…
