On March 23rd, 2024, we had the opportunity to experience three outstanding metal bands at Utopia in Turku: SVARTA HAVET, HAVUKRUUNU, and the black metal phenomenon AFSKY.
The evening began with SVARTA HAVET, stepping in for QWÄLEN due to unforeseen circumstances. SVARTA HAVET turned out to be a remarkable surprise, exceeding all expectations. It’s one of those rare occasions when you encounter a band completely unfamiliar to you and are utterly blown away by their performance. Hailing from Turku, SVARTA HAVET, led by a female vocalist, exuded incredible energy and immediately captivated the audience. I highly recommend delving into their music to experience their captivating sound.
Next up was HAVUKRUUNU, a pagan black metal band from Hausjärvi. They took the stage with a burst of fast, intricate riffs that had the audience enthusiastically headbanging along. Their music is an intriguing fusion of heavy metal with darker, pagan, and black metal influences. After a lengthy and thoroughly entertaining set, they exited amidst thunderous applause, making way for the headliner – AFSKY.
AFSKY, hailing from Copenhagen, Denmark, is the brainchild of Ole Pedersen Luk, with session musicians joining for live performances. Their distinctive style blends black metal with profound, dark lyrics. The performance was immersive and intense, with both the band and the audience clearly enjoying themselves. Witnessing the band’s sheer enjoyment of playing their music on stage was infectious. Overall, AFSKY delivered a powerful wall of black metal, making them a must-listen for enthusiasts of the genre.
