On April 15th, 2023, UADA were booked at Apollo in Turku, with MORMANT DE SNAGOV listed as their warm-up act. We headed out in the increasingly warm weather to check it out!
As I walked towards Apollo, I was little shocked that there was only one person waiting for the doors to open. I knew the gig was not sold out and was little anxious about how many people and familiar faces would be in attendance, because the Merihelvetti metal cruise set sails at about the same time. In the end, however, the crowd was a decent size and when UADA started, it felt like a sold out show in the front row.
MORMANT DE SNAGOV were formed in 2008 and we had never heard of them before, let alone seen them play. Their extreme metal went over well though and they will surely be getting some slots on my playlists going forward.
Admittedly, UADA were also new to me. The main highlight of their show was in their guitar sound, but as a photographer, the lights were quite boring to shoot them under, with blue ambient light on the band and white lights staring straight into the photo-pit.
Overall, it was a good idea to give the gig, and both bands by proxy, a try, and it was nice to see MORMANT DE SNAGOV come out to sign some CDs from the merch stand, though it was a shame that UADA didn’t seem to have any merch at the show.
