On April 13th, 2023, American black metal band WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, along with E-L-R, hit Lido Club in Berlin as part of their European Tour.
E-L-R hail from Bern, Switzerland. The trio’s stage setup was interesting, having a pagan-looking pole with a wheel ornamented with flowers and rugs on the floor. That setup with the melancholy-filled doomgaze music gave a very eerie feeling. The arrangements were simple, with singer and guitarist S.M. serving as the main ingredient in this confection, delivering riffs and an ethereal style of singing. Despite that, their music was mesmerizing and enchanting, transferring the listeners to a whole other plain. They performed tracks from the album “Vexier.”
WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM were next. When the American band took the stage, it was easy to see how much they took care to have a special atmosphere to their show. The lights were suffused, the incense smell was strong, and every guitar had a light positioned near the neck pickup that beamed over the players’ faces. As the venue didn’t even have a barrier, the people in the first rows were extremely close to the band, increasing the intimate atmosphere of the gig. During the whole concert, the crowd was completely captured by the music; there was no crazy headbanging, jumping, or screaming. Instead, many people were headbanging more slowly, following the tempo of the music, sometimes with closed eyes focusing on the music. This was the power of WITTR: music so encompassing that it was like magic transporting us to a new realm.
Overall, the show was a good experience, the only downside being the burlesque interior of the club that broke the pagan, dark mood of the show.
