Power metal is often a divisive subject for metalheads. While cheese isn’t mandatory to the sound, it is ever-present in the genre, to the point where some people simply can’t deal with the genre at all, or it’s peppy, upbeat feel as translated to other genres. Fortunately, UNLEASH THE ARCHERS are willing to push melodic power metal to the next level, as is shown in today’s featured single, “Abyss,” the title track from their next album. Mixing deep vocals with power metal riffing and fierce rhythms, this song is a great display of what is to come from UTA in 2020.
This Canadian melodic power metal band is fronted by Brittney Slayes, a mezzo-soprano with a lower standard range than the average female metal singer, that works superbly with the upbeat, melodic power metal sound. Staying confidently in her deeper register is a nice change from standard power metal, adding extra depth to the sound. The story of the Immortal continues as “Abyss” tells listeners that the star of 2017’s “Apex” has awakened yet again, though things will certainly not go down the same way as before. Classic power metal riffing is blended nicely with strong electronic synth sounds and fresh, powerful drums. Everything comes together tightly and despite the song’s long-ish playtime of nearly 7½ minutes, it never drags on nor has any filler moments.
Abyss will be released on August 21st, 2020, via Napalm Records
