REVIEW: Vortex of Thorns – EP: Useless

Finnish black metal enigma VORTEX OF THORNS, hailing from Tampere, has unleashed their latest EP, “Useless,” featuring three tracks now available on streaming platforms. This independent band embarked on their musical journey in 2023, making this the perfect opportunity to support a rising group from the very beginning.

The band’s Instagram bio is intriguingly sparse, bearing the description “all empty, but visible.” This aesthetic evoked a nostalgic feeling reminiscent of 2000s-era new acts when information about artists was often scarce, casting an alluring aura that complements their creative output. While much of their content is in Finnish, a glimpse at their YouTube channel reveals the composer and lyricist as Darkmosst, with arrangements crafted by Mörkdusst. However, the shroud of mystery still surrounds their true identities, leaving much to uncover.

The latest EP, titled “Useless,” kicks off with the eponymous track. It immediately sets a fast-paced rhythm, characterized by a production that pays attention to subtle details, such as the backing vocals with a slightly understated tone. The second track, “The Haystack,” takes a different approach, placing a more significant focus on the vocals. The vocalist passionately declares, “Burn the haystack,” which intertwines with two guitar leads, seamlessly changing and blending the tune, one following the other unexpectedly, adding a nice twist to the composition.

The third and final track, “Fail into your Failure,” channels a more classical black metal vibe. The guitars display a vigorous intensity and take center stage in the song, leaving little room for doubt about their prominence. As the song concludes, the auto-replay feature highlights how they come together seamlessly, creating a full-circle experience.

The black metal scene has always held a magnetic appeal for me, and this time was no different. I encourage you to check out this EP on your preferred streaming service and join us in following this new northern star and what the future holds. The artwork is equally impressive with its polished design, featuring the imagery of a human eye serving as a vortex of thorns, acting as an alert to the emotions lurking within the dark recesses of the human soul, enticing a manlike figure towards its center.
