Crafting an extravagant, dramatic style of symphonic metal requires a bold vision and meticulous attention to detail. Drawing inspiration from literature, philosophy, and the vast expanse of the world itself, LOST IN GREY, a seven-piece band from Finland, has embarked on a remarkable journey over the past decade, releasing three full-length albums. With influences spanning across various musical genres and the broad spectrum of metal, “Odyssey Into the Grey” marks a significant milestone. This move signifies their continued dedication to weaving together diverse influences, aiming to captivate listeners and transport them on an epic adventure to glory. Scheduled for release on April 5th, 2024, through El Puerto Records, “Odyssey Into the Grey” promises to be a captivating musical odyssey.

The album opens with “The Entourage,” a captivating and energetic track that sets the stage for the journey ahead. Its grandiose movements and rich orchestration introduce listeners to the expansive sonic landscape of “Odyssey Into the Grey“, while also serving as a majestic meta intro, introducing the characters of Lillian, Patrick, and Odessa. The band members’ acting is always full of emotions. The track not only captivates with its captivating energy but also hints at the theme of artistic evolution and the need for change to keep things interesting, setting the tone for the adventure that lies ahead.

As the intensity of “The Entourage” fades away, we seamlessly transition into “The Bottomless Pit,” diving deeper into the emotional depths with its powerful and atmospheric sound. This transition maintains the momentum while introducing darker themes and evocative melodies. The magical keyboard lines from Harri Koskela and the incredible backing orchestrations immediately stand out, enveloping the listener in a spellbinding atmosphere. Vocal exchanges between Anne Lil Rajala and Emily Leone add an extra layer of depth and intrigue, seamlessly complemented by the surrounding instrumentation.

The next song emerges into the ethereal soundscape of “Time.” This track mesmerizes with its intricate layers and contrasting elements, drawing listeners into a transcendent journey. The song opens with a soft, mysterious atmosphere. The vocals start light and delicate before the choir kicks up the dramatic feel. As the song gets heavier and darker in sound, with rougher drums creating an unsettling atmosphere towards the end the song resonates with the weight of tension and urgency, perfectly capturing the sense of being under pressure within the context of the narrative.

Next, we are transported to the haunting beauty of “Two Wolves.” Its Nordic-inspired melodies and folk influences create a serene yet captivating atmosphere. The beginning of the song introduces a mysterious and ominous atmosphere, with an unusual folk-inspired march. The orchestration and echoing drums give an ominous feel that blends with the traditional Sámi form of singing similar to some Slavic throat singing style. This track stands out due to its mystical and folky ambiance, captivating vocal performances, and impressive violin lines. This song is exceptional, from the keyboards and percussion to the rich soundscape. The transition to the gentle pianos, accompanied by violins and flutes, further adds to its enchanting allure. “Two Wolves” is undeniably a magical work.

“A New Dawn” is one of awakening and renewal. As the haunting melodies of the former fade away, the uplifting anthem of “A New Dawn” emerges, signaling hope and transformation. The choirs and strings intensify the atmosphere. Anne Lil Rajala and Emily Leone’s soft vocals add depth, contrasting with Harri Koskela‘s gritty delivery. The song transitions smoothly, offering a dynamic journey.

The next venture into the enchanting realm of “Vem Kan Segla Förutan Vind.” This mesmerizing track captivates with its spellbinding atmosphere, seamlessly weaving together vocals and instruments in a delicate dance. As “Vem Kan Segla Förutan Vind” fades into the distance, we find ourselves immersed in the gentle and tragic ballad of “Hailuoto.” Acoustic guitars and violins lead the melodies forward, creating a cinematic grandeur that evokes a profound sense of emotion.

Finally, we arrive at the epic conclusion of the cinematic “Odyssey into the Grey.” This magnum opus encapsulates the essence of the entire album, drawing upon all the themes and motifs explored throughout the journey. Its sprawling arrangements and evocative storytelling leave a lasting impression, bringing the album to a satisfying and harmonious close.

LOST IN GREY are masters their craft. In terms of technical execution, there’s nothing to fault with “Odyssey Into The Grey.LOST IN GREY are not only solid instrumentalists but also excel as excellent songwriters, seamlessly connecting their multifaceted musical elements into consistently homogeneous compositions that, despite an average song length of seven and a half minutes, never feel artificially extended. Under the direction of band leader Harri Koskela himself, the songs were competently produced and then wonderfully punchy and differentiated mixed.
