Musicalypse has recently shown a fairly strong affinity for EMBER FALLS, but did you know that their vocalist, Tuomas Välimaa, also sings for another fantastic local band called EVERWAVE [previously known as EMBRACE THE ABANDONED]? They’ve been playing local gigs and have a few kickass songs available on Spotify. Plus, with EMBER FALLS‘ new single out last Friday, having this playlist out now seems only fitting!
1. The first song you remember hearing as a child
Firstly I have to say that I’m really bad at reminiscing about my childhood. But I remember listening to a song from an old cassette and when I think back, I believe the song was from a Three Musketeers musical in Finnish. Have not found it anywhere since, as I do not know the name of it, but it kicked ass!
2. The first song you can recall ever really and truly loving
HIM – “The Funeral of Hearts”; a song that actually made me want to learn to play piano, so I did. At least the main theme of the song.
3. A song that you loved as a teenager/reminds you of high school
Whenever I listen to the old CHILDREN OF BODOM records I am thrown into a nostalgic trip. Almost any song from the first album up to “Hate Crew Deathroll” would do it.
4. The song or band that got you into metal music (or the current genre you play in)
Has to be NIGHTWISH – “Over the Hills and Far Away.” I was probably 10 years old or so and got my first stereo. Also Jukka Nevalainen was the one that inspired me to play drums for about 10 years or so.
5. The most recent song to get stuck in your head
EMBER FALLS – “COE.” Might be because we just released the single but the chorus really does get stuck in your head.
6. Your guilty pleasure song/band
This is a tough one. It’s hard for me to name a guilty pleasure song for the amount of guilt I should feel is always determined by the one reading this. I also tend to get annoyed about 98% of the pop songs on the radio. But one summer they played a song that I didn’t get annoyed by. It was LORD EST – “Jotain Mukavaa.”
7. The first album you bought with your own money/the first album you were really excited to own
EVANESCENCE – “Fallen.” One of my favorite bands as a kid. I also had bit of a crush on Amy Lee so I didn’t mind spending all my money on their album.
8. A song that makes you want to curl up on the couch with a hot beverage
Ólafur Arnalds – “Old Skin.” The song that hooked me up to Ólafur Arnalds. Almost any of his songs would fit here though. I don’t know what they put in their drinking water up there in Iceland but I really love the music they make.
9. A song to blast at full volume while you’re on the road
AGENT FRESCO – “See Hell.” This band is a quite recent discovery but already love it to bits! Saw them live in Helsinki for the first time last winter and it was their first gig in Finland too. Arnór Dan has become a huge inspiration for me as a singer. Freaking Icelanders…
10. The song you’d most like to be played at your funeral
Yona – “Lintu.” This song hit me hard when I first heard it. First I was thinking more of a happier song but then I realized that I have always had a hard time feeling strong emotions through happy songs. So I wanted to pick one that has touched me personally.
