On the cold Friday of December 9th, 2023, the acclaimed Finnish vocalist Tarja visited the German capital with her Dark Christmas Tour.
The venue was an old church called the Passion Church, and it wasn’t the first time Tarja had performed there. The interior was impressive, and it was full to the brim. The crowd was diverse and interesting, ranging from people with black metal tees to families with small children. The lights dimmed, and Tarja appeared on stage, accompanied by loud cheers. She looked ethereal in a long white dress, contrasting beautifully with her raven hair and red lipstick. Her powerful voice reverberated in the chapel with the first notes of “The First Noel.” The set list was crafted from traditional Christmas songs and covers like “O Tannenbaum,” “Jingle Bells,” and “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” taken from her “From Spirits and Ghosts” album. The atmosphere in the church was lyrical and ambient, with no orchestra; TARJA’s voice was accompanied only by a piano and a bass guitar. It was a unique and magical evening.
