On Sunday evening of May 4th, 2025, Dutch metal fans were going to have a full Finnish lineup at the 013 venue in Tilburg with STAM1NA, BEFORE THE DAWN, and SWALLOW THE SUN.
The evening started off with the relentless energy from STAM1NA. It’s not only their tempo changes in their progressive thrash that spike your energy, but also their charismatic stage presence and headbanging galore. They had a few fans in the audience who could sing along to the songs and nod their head at the right moments, but for most, this was an introduction to this Finnish gem. They also delivered a little bit of Finnish humor, which was also well received. They left a great impression.
There was a little break of total silence in between sets to honor the Dutch Remembrance Day. It was up to BEFORE THE DAWN to get a bit of that energy back. And to give it a twist, as the mood is more melodic and dark. To do so, they started off with the hauntingly beautiful track “My Darkness.” The band has returned with a new lineup and treated the audience with a compelling performance. One that drags you into a darker mood. They presented us with some old classics and, of course, also the new “As above so below,” their latest single from their upcoming album.
It was clear most people did come to see SWALLOW THE SUN as the venue was packed. The legends of Finnish doom metal attract a vast audience in the Netherlands. Dressed up hooded on a dark stage, they leave room for their music to speak for itself. They build up their song carefully piece by piece, haunting with a crushing heaviness, guttural growls from Mikko Kotamäki, and beautiful, melancholic riffs. The set was mesmerizing by the signature slow and captivating soundscapes. They are masters in creating a certain atmosphere that is truly their own. They left one of their biggest hits for last. “Swallow” is an absolute masterpiece, and the full crowd went ecstatic, leaving us wanting more.
