As the third night of Inferno Festival descended upon Oslo’s Rockefeller and John Dee venue on March 30th, 2024, the air crackled with anticipation for another evening of blackened rituals and sonic sorcery. With a lineup boasting diverse acts ranging from the folk-tinged sounds of BORKNAGAR to the symphonic black metal of DIMMU BORGIR headlining the night, attendees prepared to embark on a journey into the depths of darkness. The third day of Inferno was the day that sold out the quickest, and the main venue, Rockefeller, was even more crowded than the day before.

The evening began for me with a concert by the Polish band IN TWILIGHT’S EMBRACE, delivering a raw performance of blackened fury, featuring songs like “Lifeblood,” “Cutting Down the Trees of Eden,” and “The Death Drive.” The night began with a departure from the traditional black metal sound as ME AND THAT MAN took the stage. The side project of BEHEMOTH frontman Nergal, ME AND THAT MAN‘s blend of blues-infused rock and dark folk set a hauntingly atmospheric tone for the night ahead, drawing listeners into their shadowy realm. During ME AND THAT MAN, the audience could see on the stage Sivert Høyem, singer of the Norwegian classic rock band MADRUGADA, and Jørgen Munkeby of the Norwegian jazz band SHINING. ME AND THAT MAN’s set included “My Church Is Black,” “Burning Churches,” “Coming Home,” and a cover of MADRUGADA’s “Look Away Lucifer.” Next up was BORKNAGAR, Norwegian pioneers of progressive black metal. With their intricate compositions and soaring melodies, BORKNAGAR mesmerized the audience, creating mystical sounds. As the night went on, JO QUAIL took over with her haunting cello compositions, adding a touch of elegance to the festival’s atmosphere. JO QUAIL’s performance in John Dee was followed by KHOLD’s concert, shifting the delicate sounds of the cello back into the black metal sound. As DIMMU BORGIR‘s last notes faded away, the third day of the Inferno Festival came to an end.
