Beyond The Gates Festival, held annually in Bergen, Norway, featured a powerful lineup of black and extreme metal bands. This year’s festival was held from July 31st until August 3rd and some of the festival’s key performers included MAYHEM, BEHEMOTH, VENOM, WATAIN, SATYRICON, and many more.
The final day of Beyond The Gates was an epic conclusion to the festival, bringing an amazing line-up that highlighted the diversity of black metal. With performances from VEMOD, VREID, SATYRICON, and a BATHORY tribute band, the night was a journey through the genre’s various expressions.
VEMOD opened the evening with their atmospheric and melancholic sound. Their performance was a meditative exploration of black metal’s more introspective side, with ethereal melodies. VREID followed with a high-energy set that injected a dose of black n’ roll riffs into the evening. VREID’s performance was followed by a performance by this year’s headliner, SATYRICON with the second part of their unique set, “Horns & Diadems.” The setlist consisted of songs from different albums and included: “Now, Diabolical,” “Die by My Hand,” “The Pentagram Burnsn” “K.I.N.G.”
The night ended with a BATHORY tribute band, honoring one of black metal’s founding fathers, Thomas “Quorthon” Forsberg. The performance started with lighting the candles next to Quorthon’s photo, followed by iconic BATHORY’s song “A Fine Day to Die” with Gaahl on the vocal. The performance featured musicians from different bands, such as GORGOROTH, WATAIN, DARVAZA, EMPEROR, ENSLAVED, and, of course, original members of BATHORY.
