Helsinki Synth City‘s recent showcase of KEBU‘s Synthesizer Legends Tour 2024 electrified On the Rocks in Helsinki on April 24th, 2024.
KEBU, hailing from Finland, crafts melodic electronic music heavily influenced by the iconic sounds of the ’70s and ’80s. Renowned for his adept manipulation of analog synthesis and enthralling live performances, KEBU boasts a YouTube channel with over 100 million views and a global fanbase. With an impressive resume of over 100 concerts across 13 European countries, KEBU‘s shows exude warmth, joy, and a vast array of analog synths reminiscent of the golden age of synthesizer music. His accolades include the prestigious Best International Artist Award at the German Schallwelle Music Awards in 2018 and 2022.
Before KEBU took the stage, DJ Benjamin Risto Uuno primed the audience with his own unique set, setting the perfect tone for what was to come. Following his performance, the Helsinki Synth City crew expressed gratitude to the devoted attendees, singling out one particularly loyal fan who had been present since the inaugural event, rewarding her with VIP status and complimentary access to all future gatherings.
Throughout KEBU‘s set, which predominantly featured iconic ’80s and ’90s theme songs from movies, TV shows, and video games, interspersed with lesser-known gems, the audience was treated not only to musical delights but also to KEBU‘s witty banter and insights into his analog synths. Despite the infectious energy emanating from the stage, the crowd’s reluctance to dance made the show experience slightly bland for me. After all, as any seasoned concert-goer knows, movement is not only encouraged but essential for truly immersing oneself in the experience. DJ Benjamin Risto Uuno also played more tunes after the main show, but as many in the audience weren’t dancers, there, unfortunately, weren’t many left to enjoy his set.
