Winter has come and the winter club gigs have come along with it. In Turku, we started strong, with a SWALLOW THE SUN gig in Logomo on December 1st, 2022.
The first band of the night was Turku-based EINVIGI, a quartet founded in 2014, whose signature sound can be described as melodic atmospheric doom metal with a distinctive influence from Finnish folk music. The club was just starting to fill up as the band took to the stage. In their short set, besides introducing themselves to the wider public, they also paid tribute to the headliner by playing a cover of one of their songs.
At 21:00 sharp, the lights dimmed and SWALLOW THE SUN appeared on stage, surrounded by dozens of lit candles, which created a church-like atmosphere. The legends of Finnish doom metal did not disappoint, delivering a perfectly balanced set of both their classics and the newer compositions. The band, led by vocalist Mikko Kotamäki, delivered a powerful and emotive performance, together with guitarists Juha Raivio and Juho Räihä‘s heavy riffs captivating the audience. Their signature slow, crushing riffs and guttural vocals were mesmerizing, and the crowd was completely enraptured. The performance was hypnotic, as their ability to create atmosphere is truly impressive. They performed both their new compositions from the 2021 album, “Moonflowers,” as well as classics such as “Cathedral Walls” and “Falling World.” The main moment worth remembering was when they played the spine-chilling “Moonflowers Bloom in Misery” as an encore, which had the entire venue smiling and swaying to the rhythm.
Overall, it was an incredible night of doom metal music and the concert was a truly epic experience, with both EINVIGI and SWALLOW THE SUN delivering powerful and emotional performances. The audience was left fully satisfied and already looking forward to the next time these bands grace the stage.
