28.11.2018 Glenn Hughes performs classic Deep Purple @ The Circus, Helsinki

I always had an affinity for Deep Purple mk 3 and 4. “Burn” is one of my favorite Deep Purple albums. That’s why when it was announced that Glenn Hughes would come to The Circus on 28 November 2018 to play some of his Deep Purple classics, I couldn’t have been more excited.

I never heard any of these songs played live, so when the band started off with an energetic “Stormbringer” I couldn’t be more excited. Moreover, Glenn Hughes’ voice is still as enchanting as ever and it almost seems as if there is nothing that he can’t do. Sometimes he missed the tone when he the highest ones, but seeing how piercing those falsettos are, it’s still very impressive. These are things that Ian Gillan cannot do anymore, excluding a lot of songs from the current setlist.

The band played a total of 12 songs, but it was filled up with a lot of instrumental groovy moments, as well as solos of each of the musicians. Interestingly enough, Mr. Glenn Hughes himself did not do a bass solo, which to be honest I would have actually enjoyed. The band played all my favorite songs, for me the highlights of the evening were “Sail Away”, “Gettin’ Tighter”, “Mistreated” and lastly “Burn.

The event wasn’t sold out, but the turnout was overall positive. A lot of people showed up and were impressed by the band and the songs. Glenn Hughes, overall, seemed to have a lot of fun performing, he guaranteed he would be back as the tour is still going on until 2020. Let’s hope he will come for another round, I know I’m gonna be there!
