16.11.2018 The Night Flight Orchestra @ On The Rocks, Helsinki

The Night Flight Orchestra published their outstanding new album “Sometimes The World Ain’t Enough” a little while ago through Nuclear Blast. We thought the album was incredible and it brought us straight back to the eighties. The album left a big impression on me, so when it was announced the supergroup led by Björn Strid (Soilwork) was coming to Helsinki on 16 November 2018, I knew I had to be part of the evening.

The agency – Raven Management –  who brought The Night Flight Orchestra is new on the market but clearly did an amazing job. It was the first show the booking agency did, and the tickets were selling like hot cakes. Hopefully, this means that The Night Flight Orchestra is coming to Finland a lot more!

The Night Flight Orchestra hit the stage all suited up and brought glamour and glitter to a fully packed On The Rocks. A Finnish audience usually is quite reserved, but during the whole show, the crowd was shaking their hips and asses as if it was meant to be. I also felt the need to do the same and couldn’t control myself, with the cheesy eighties melodies on the background and catchy songs the band didn’t leave much room for standing still. Starting off with the title track of the album “Sometimes The World Ain’t Enough” the band took us through a journey of 15 tracks with equal energy throughout the whole show.

Songs like “Speedwagon”, “Midnight Flyer” and “Paralyzed” turned On The Rocks into a glamorous rock’n’roll disco party, including everything from headbanging to dancing, no limitations, Strid also made sure all the band members were glitter-approved by throwing around with glitter. The whole front of the stage and crew were covered with the sparkling material.

The journey came to an end with “This Time”, “Lovers In The Rain” and “West Ruth Ave”. Those tunes are true earworms that generated even more enthusiasm in the club. After one and a half hours the show was finally over, but no one regretted embarking on this journey with the band. The party continued with some DJs who played the biggest eighties rock classic, but then unfortunately switched over to the nineties. Nevertheless, the evening was top-notch and this may have just been the best show that I have witnessed in one year. I’ll definitely remember this while writing up the end of the year report! Be sure to check out if The Night Flight Orchestra is playing a show near you, buy a ticket, I ensure you you will have the time of your life!
