16-01-2017 Wishbone Ash @ Spirit of 66, Verviers, Belgium

Since I am spending my holidays in Belgium, it was a good excuse to go to one of the nicest and underrated venues in Belgium, called Spirit of 66 in Verviers, Belgium. Legendary Wishbone Ash, was scheduled for 16 January. Unfortunately, I was not able to take my camera to the venue, as I’ve been having a lot of pain in my neck.

I never know beforehand what the support act is and when I entered the venue, what I basically saw is a one-mand band performing blues: Canadian Steve Hill.  I was amazingly surprised, especially because it’s always been my secret dream to have a one-man band. His songs sounded on point and very interesting and he was able to do his act very well. Overall, I’m very positive about his performance and would like to see and discover more of his music.

Then it was time for Wishbone Ash, coming all the way from UK to see their beloved fans. Every year they play in this venue and every year it’s almost the same audience. It’s quite nice to see that they actually have a bond with the crowd. And often it feels as if they are coming “home” to something. It’s 21 sharp when Andy Powell and his band take over the stage and they start out with Bona Fide. The setlist has changed a lot, but gives us the opportunity to travel back through time, easily. Both old songs and quite recent songs were combined and personal highlight of the evening was for me “The King Will Come”.

It’s always great to see Wishbone Ash, because they give the impression that they are actually having fun on stage and seem to work well together! They ended the night with Phoenix, which is still one of their greatest songs and works very well to close a perfect evening.
